Jules Milhau
Painter
Jules Milhau is 24 years old. From the age of 3, drawing and painting became his language. His inspiration comes from his family roots: the Camargue, Spain, Algeria, Corsica... his world is profoundly Mediterranean. He divides his time between painting and his flamenco lessons.
2016 - At 15, Jules made a name for himself with the “cilouettes”, a tribute to his great-great-aunt who always dressed as Sonia Rykiel. Publication of a first book published by Erick Bonnier: Cilou by Jules with a preface by Nathalie Rykiel.
2017 - First exhibition at Galerie 37, Aigues Mortes
Jules exhibits around thirty works there: his caged and free birds, perched on power lines, his slender bullfighters on tiptoes...
“The series of bullfighters began a few years ago during a walk in the family farmhouse. The rain had drawn strange silhouettes on the cement walls of one of the houses. I took out my notebook, my box of watercolors and a brush that I dipped in a puddle of water. Little by little the characters became bullfighters in a paseo momentum. »
2018 - Jules creates the poster for the 30th anniversary of the Arles Bullfighting School. He passed his baccalaureate.
2019 - Taconeo exhibition, Galerie Anne Clergue, Arles
Taconeo: the wild rhythm marked by the heels of flamenco dancers.
Jules exhibits large-scale paintings, his Meninas, octopuses drawn with their ink, nests with complex architecture, fans with the palm trees of the family farmhouse.
The work of the Las Meninas began when I discovered Picasso's Las Meninas in Barcelona, then Velázquez's Las Meninas at the Grand Palais in Paris. Completely fascinated by the strength of the characters in Las Meninas, I too wanted to paint them, in series on different supports with different techniques (canvas, newspaper, Arches paper, oil, acrylic, glue pigment). By introducing fish into their dresses, I was also inspired by Kusturica's film, Arizona Dream. »
The Taconeo catalog, published by Erick Bonnier, is prefaced by Agnès Jaoui, actress-director, and Rudy Ricciotti, Grand Prix national de lʼarchitecture.
